What is port Forwarding and why do I have to set it up?

There are actually two parts to your network. The World Wide Web (www or the Internet) and your internal LAN (local area network). They are seperated by your router which is like the traffic cop to your LAN. By default your router will only allow your LAN to make requests from the Internet. It does not allow the internet to make requests from the computer(s) on your LAN. In order to set up any kind of server you have to tell the router to allow certain requests from the internet to the computer you are running the server on by opening up a port to that computer. This is like building a bridge to your computer. Click here for in step by step directions on how to set up your router to handle port forwarding.

Why doesn't the Apache server run on my computer?

Though XAMPP usually installs Apache without a problem there are some cases where the configuration of your computer my cause a conflict. One of the most common problems is if you are already runnung a server on port 80 (the default port for an HTTP server). This is true if you are running Vista as your operating system or something like BeyondTV which allows you to administer it over the internet. This can often be resolved by opening the httpd.conf file in your Apache directory and finding the line "Listen 80". Change this to "Listen 8080" and restart your server. If you continue to have a problem post it to one of the many forums dedicated to the Apache server. My favorite is http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum92/
